The Islamic Principle
Quran 2:223 — "Your wives are a place of sowing of seed for you, so come to your place of cultivation however you wish and put forth [righteousness] for yourselves." Scholars widely interpret this ayah as permitting various sexual positions between husband and wife.
What Is Permitted (Halal)
- All positions involving vaginal intercourse — there is no restriction on position per classical scholarship
- Foreplay of all kinds between husband and wife
- Oral stimulation — scholars differ on this; the majority permit it though some consider it disliked (makruh). None declare it absolutely haram with strong evidence.
- Manual stimulation between spouses — permitted by scholarly consensus
- Intimacy through the entire body — all scholars permit
What Is Prohibited (Haram)
- Anal intercourse: Explicitly prohibited — the Prophet ﷺ cursed those who do this. Multiple clear hadith. Health reasons align with the prohibition (significant infection and injury risk).
- Intercourse during menstruation: Explicitly prohibited in Quran (2:222). Digital stimulation and intimacy otherwise permitted during this time.
- Sex during postnatal bleeding (nifas): Prohibited until bleeding ends
- Sex during fasting hours in Ramadan: If fasting, intercourse invalidates the fast and requires kaffarah (expiation)
The Scholars on Variety and Enjoyment
Classical scholars including Ibn Qudama, al-Nawawi, and al-Ghazali all addressed marital intimacy with openness. Al-Ghazali wrote in Ihya Ulum al-Din that a husband should ensure his wife reaches satisfaction — noting that neglecting her pleasure is a form of harm. The Islamic framework is pro-pleasure within halal bounds.
