What Is Sex Addiction?
A pattern of compulsive sexual thoughts and behaviours that:
- Feel out of control
- Continue despite negative consequences (damaged relationships, financial cost, legal risk, health risk)
- Escalate over time — needing more to achieve the same effect
- Cause significant distress or interfere with daily functioning
It is recognised as a disorder (Compulsive Sexual Behaviour Disorder) in the ICD-11 (international medical classification). It is not a moral failure — it is a compulsive behaviour pattern with neurobiological components.
Common Forms in Pakistan
- Compulsive pornography use despite wanting to stop
- Compulsive seeking of real-world sexual encounters at personal risk
- Compulsive masturbation interfering with daily life
- Compulsive sexual messaging and online sexual interactions
Many Pakistani men describe this pattern with shame but not its name. Naming it correctly — as a compulsion with treatment options, not a character defect — is the beginning of recovery.
The Islamic Connection
Islamic tradition recognises compulsive behaviours — nafs al-ammara (the commanding self) that drives us toward what harms us. The Sufi tradition has extensive literature on disciplining the nafs. Islamic recovery approaches combine spiritual practice with psychological work.
Recovery
- Professional therapy: CBT for sexual compulsion is evidence-based. Find a psychologist with this experience.
- 12-step approaches: Sex Addicts Anonymous has international online support
- Accountability: A trusted person who knows your situation — spouse, counsellor, imam
- Environment change: Remove triggers — content blockers, changed routines
- Spiritual practice: Regular salah, Quran, dhikr — the Prophet ﷺ said these things prevent immorality
