Islamic ruling on contraception: The Prophet ﷺ and his Companions practised coitus interruptus (withdrawal/azl) as a form of contraception. This established the Islamic principle that preventing conception is permitted. All four madhabs permit contraception, with some conditions and differences on specific methods.
Methods Available in Pakistan
Condoms (Male)
- Effectiveness: 98% with perfect use, 85% with typical use
- Islamic ruling: Permitted — analogous to azl
- Access: Available at all pharmacies in Pakistan, no prescription required
- STI protection: Only method that also protects against STIs
Combined Oral Contraceptive Pill
- Effectiveness: 99%+ with perfect use
- Islamic ruling: Permitted by majority of scholars for valid family planning reasons
- Access: Available at pharmacies, prescription recommended for appropriate type selection
- Common brands in Pakistan: Lo-Femenal, Microgynon available at most pharmacies
IUD (Copper or Hormonal)
- Effectiveness: 99.9% — one of the most effective methods
- Islamic ruling: Copper IUD permitted (prevents fertilisation); some scholars debate hormonal IUD
- Access: Inserted by a gynaecologist; available at government hospitals
- Duration: 5–10 years depending on type
Injectable Contraception (Depo-Provera)
- Effectiveness: 99%+ with perfect use
- Frequency: Every 3 months
- Access: Via government health centres or gynaecologist
Natural Methods (NFP/FAM)
- Tracking menstrual cycles to identify fertile days
- Islamic ruling: Permitted — most aligned with principles of natural family planning
- Effectiveness: 76–99% depending on method and use — less reliable than medical methods
- Requires regular menstrual cycles and careful tracking
Emergency Contraception
- Levonorgestrel (Plan B equivalent) — available in Pakistan, should be taken within 72 hours
- Islamic ruling: Permitted by many scholars for emergency use (prevents ovulation/fertilisation)
- Not for regular use — less effective than consistent contraception
