The Islamic Ruling
The Prophet ﷺ said: "He is cursed who comes to a woman in her back passage." (Abu Dawud, authenticated). Multiple hadith with similar wording exist. All four major madhabs (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali) agree: anal sex is haram, even between husband and wife.
This is not a contested ruling. It is one of the clearest prohibitions in Islamic marital law — and it aligns with medical reality.
Medical Reasons the Prohibition Makes Sense
- Infection risk: The rectum is not a sterile environment. The risk of transferring bacteria causing serious infections is significant.
- Physical injury: The anal sphincter and rectal tissue are not designed for penetration. Tearing, fissures, and long-term sphincter damage are documented risks.
- STI transmission: The highest-risk route for transmission of HIV and other STIs — rectal tissue tears easily, providing direct blood contact.
- Long-term continence: Repeated anal penetration is associated with faecal incontinence in research literature.
If You're Being Pressured
Some Pakistani women report being pressured or coerced into anal sex. Clearly:
- This is haram for the husband to demand
- You have full Islamic right to refuse
- It is not part of a wife's obligations
- If you are being physically coerced, this is abuse: Umang 0311-7786264, Aurat Foundation 051-2890505
