WhatsApp dating scams in Pakistan: how they work and how to protect yourself.
WhatsApp is Pakistan's dominant communication platform — and the most common channel for dating scams. The platform's ubiquity, end-to-end encryption, and ability to send large media files makes it ideal for scammers. These are the specific tactics used on WhatsApp in Pakistan.
The WhatsApp video trap
You receive a video call from an unknown number or a new contact. When you answer, you see someone who appears attractive and friendly. Within minutes, the video on their end becomes intimate or sexual. Your camera is on. You may or may not have been aware of this. Shortly after, you receive a message: "I recorded you. Pay me or I'll send this to your contacts."

The WhatsApp number switch
You match on a dating app. Within minutes or hours, they ask to move to WhatsApp — "I'm not often on the app, WhatsApp is easier." Moving to WhatsApp removes the dating app's moderation, reporting tools, and evidence trail. Always be more cautious after this transition.
Fake Pakistani numbers
Scammers use virtual Pakistani numbers (031X, 032X) that appear local but route through VOIP services operated abroad. A Pakistani +92 number does not mean the person is in Pakistan or is Pakistani.
The screenshot threat
Conversations that started romantically — where you may have been open or personal — are screenshotted and threatened to be shared with your family, employer, or social circle unless you pay.
What to do: Do not write anything in early WhatsApp conversations with new contacts that you would not want your family to read. Assume any new contact could screenshot any message.
Protecting yourself on WhatsApp
- Set your profile photo to contacts-only (Settings → Privacy → Profile Photo)
- Never answer video calls from unknown numbers
- Turn off automatic media download (Settings → Storage → automatically download media → Off)
- Do not send intimate photos or videos under any circumstances
- If a new contact immediately becomes romantic, slow down — this is the love-bombing phase
- Report and block without hesitation if anything feels wrong
