How to meet someone safely from online in Pakistan: the practical guide.
Meeting someone in person for the first time — after connecting online — is a moment that requires specific practical preparation. This is not about fear. It's about being in control of your own safety so that you can actually enjoy the meeting.
Before you leave the house
Tell someone exactly where you're going
Tell a trusted friend or family member: the venue name and address, who you're meeting (share their number, profile screenshot, or name), what time you're expected to be back. This is not optional — it is the most important safety step you can take.
Share your live location
WhatsApp, Google Maps, and iPhone's Find My all allow real-time location sharing. Share it with your trusted contact before you leave and keep it active until you're home safely.
Verify them one more time
Before leaving: check once more that they are who they say they are. Look up their number, their social media, anything that has changed since you first checked.
Choosing where to meet
- Public place, always — a cafe, restaurant, shopping mall, or park. Never a private residence, hotel room, or car.
- Somewhere you know — choose a venue you're familiar with, where you know the layout, and where you feel comfortable
- Somewhere well-lit and populated — not quiet streets, not empty restaurants, not isolated parks
- Daytime for a first meeting — if possible, arrange afternoon meetings rather than evenings
Safe cities in Pakistan: recommended first-meeting areas
- Karachi: Zamzama cafes, Dolmen Mall Clifton, Port Grand, DHA Phase 6 commercial
- Lahore: MM Alam Road cafes, Packages Mall, Emporium Mall, Liberty Market area
- Islamabad: F-7 Markaz, Centaurus Mall, Kohsar Market
- Rawalpindi: Saddar commercial area, Raja Bazaar food street
During the meeting
- Arrange your own transport — do not rely on them to pick you up. This keeps you in control of when you leave.
- Keep your phone charged — bring a power bank if needed
- Have a bail-out plan — arrange with a friend to call you 30 minutes in. If you need to leave, you have a reason ready.
- Don't drink anything you didn't see poured — this applies everywhere, not just Pakistan
- Trust your instincts — if something feels wrong in the first 10 minutes, you are allowed to leave. You owe no one your continued presence.
- Check in with your trusted contact — a quick message: "I'm here, all fine" at the start and "Leaving now" at the end
You are always allowed to leave. "I'm not feeling well" is sufficient reason. "Something came up" is sufficient reason. No reason at all is sufficient reason. You do not owe anyone an explanation for your own safety.
Getting home safely
- Use your own ride — Careem, InDrive, Uber, or someone you trust
- Do not accept a lift from them on a first meeting
- Message your trusted contact when you're home
- If you feel unsafe at any point — call someone, ask venue staff for help, or call 15 (police)
