Dating app scams in Pakistan: every type, how they work, how to stop them.

Dating App ScamsPakistanCybercrimeFraud

Dating apps in Pakistan are targeted by multiple types of scams — from romance fraud to extortion rings operating out of specific cities. Understanding how each scam works is the most effective protection against it.

The seven most common dating app scams in Pakistan

1. The romance scam

Months of relationship-building followed by a financial emergency. See our full romance scam guide.

2. The sextortion scam

They ask for intimate photos or video, then threaten to share them unless you pay. See our sextortion guide. Do not pay. Report immediately.

3. The investment scam (pig butchering)

A new match who seems sophisticated starts talking about cryptocurrency or forex investments they're making huge returns on. They offer to help you invest. The "platform" is fake. The returns are fake. When you try to withdraw, there are always fees — and your money is gone. This scam has cost Pakistanis millions and is growing rapidly.

4. The advance fee scam

They're coming to visit you in Pakistan, or need help with a business deal. Just a small advance — a visa fee, a customs payment, a contract deposit. You send it. The visit never happens. The deal never existed.

5. The fake profile / data harvesting scam

A profile designed to extract personal information — your employer, your address, your family details — that is then used for identity fraud, targeted harassment, or sold to data brokers.

6. The live video scam

You're invited to a private video chat. The "person" on screen is a pre-recorded loop or AI-generated. You're recorded without consent. The recording is used for blackmail.

7. The fake verification scam

A message claiming to be from a dating app asking you to "verify your account" via a link. The link captures your login credentials, phone number, or payment details. No legitimate app will ask you to verify via a WhatsApp message or external link.

If someone you've never met in person asks for money — for any reason — it is a scam. No exceptions. Not for flights. Not for medical bills. Not for visa fees. Not for business. Not ever.
