Women in the Quran: How Allah Describes Their Importance

A Surah Named After Women
Surah An-Nisa — the fourth and longest Madinan chapter — is named "The Women." 176 verses on inheritance, marriage, divorce, and spiritual equality. An entire chapter. This is not incidental.
يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اتَّقُوا رَبَّكُمُ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُم مِّن نَّفْسٍ وَاحِدَةٍ وَخَلَقَ مِنْهَا زَوْجَهَا
"O people, fear your Lord who created you from a single soul and created from it its mate." — Quran 4:1
The entire human social order begins from the pair. Women are foundational to the human story from its first verse.
إِنَّ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَالْمُسْلِمَاتِ وَالْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ
"Indeed the Muslim men and Muslim women, and the believing men and believing women..." — Quran 33:35
This verse names men and women equally for every quality of a believer. Identical standing. Identical reward.
وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ أَنْ خَلَقَ لَكُم مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا لِّتَسْكُنُوا إِلَيْهَا
"Among His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find sukoon in them." — Quran 30:21
Women are the source of sukoon — the deepest peace the soul finds in another person. This is an extraordinary designation.
مَنْ أَحَقُّ بِحُسْنِ صَحَابَتِي؟ قَالَ: أُمُّكَ، قَالَ: ثُمَّ مَنْ؟ قَالَ: أُمُّكَ، قَالَ: ثُمَّ مَنْ؟ قَالَ: أُمُّكَ
"Who most deserves my good treatment?" "Your mother." "Then who?" "Your mother." "Then who?" "Your mother." "Then who?" "Then your father." — Bukhari 5971
Three-quarters of the child's best treatment belongs to the mother. One of the most explicit statements of female importance in any religious tradition.
خَيْرُكُمْ خَيْرُكُمْ لِأَهْلِهِ وَأَنَا خَيْرُكُمْ لِأَهْلِي
"The best of you is the best to his family (wife)." — Tirmidhi 3895, hasan sahih
The measure of a man's moral standing is how he treats his wife. Women are this central to Islamic values.
