The Quran's Sexual Ethics: A Complete Survey
The Quran addresses human sexuality with more directness, nuance, and practical detail than most Muslims realise. These verses, read together, form a comprehensive ethical and legal framework for Islamic sexual life.
On Zina (Fornication and Adultery)
"Do not come near zina — it is an immorality and an evil way." — Quran 17:32
"The fornicatress and the fornicator — flog each with a hundred lashes. And let not compassion for them overcome you in the matter of Allah's religion." — Quran 24:2
The legal penalty — designed as deterrent with near-impossible evidentiary standard.
On Marriage and Its Sanctity
"Marry off the unmarried among you and the righteous among your male and female servants." — Quran 24:32
Marriage is actively commanded — it is not just permitted, it is encouraged as a communal responsibility.
"Among His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquillity in them, and He placed between you affection and mercy." — Quran 30:21
On Chastity (Ihsan)
"And the men who guard their chastity and the women who guard it — and the men who remember Allah much and the women — Allah has prepared for them forgiveness and a great reward." — Quran 33:35
On Marital Rights and Intimacy
"Your wives are a place of cultivation for you — so approach your place of cultivation however you wish." — Quran 2:223
Broad permission for all positions in vaginal intercourse. Revealed to remove the Companions' restriction about back-facing positions.
"They ask you about menstruation. Say: it is adha (harm). So keep away from women during menstruation." — Quran 2:222
On Modesty and Gaze
"Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts." — Quran 24:30
"Tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their private parts." — Quran 24:31
On Not Marrying Those Who Commit Zina
"The fornicator does not marry except a fornicatress or polytheist, and the fornicatress does not marry except a fornicator or polytheist." — Quran 24:3
Scholars interpret this as a strong discouragement from marrying someone known for persistent zina — not an absolute prohibition, but a serious warning about character.
On False Accusations of Chastity
"Those who accuse chaste women and do not bring four witnesses — flog them with eighty lashes." — Quran 24:4
The punishment for false accusation (qadhf) is 80 lashes — more severe than many crimes. Protecting female honour from slander is a Quranic priority.
