The Ten Commandments — Exodus 20:1-17

  1. You shall have no other gods before Me.
  2. You shall not make for yourself a carved image. — No idol worship.
  3. You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.
  4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
  5. Honour your father and your mother.
  6. You shall not murder.
  7. You shall not commit adultery.
  8. You shall not steal.
  9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour.
  10. You shall not covet.

Jesus's Great Commandments

"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets."
— Matthew 22:37-40

Jesus reduced all of biblical ethics to two principles: love God completely, and love your neighbour as yourself. He said all other commandments flow from these two. This is one of the most radical simplifications in religious history.

Biblical Sexual Ethics

"Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body."
— 1 Corinthians 6:18
"Let marriage be held in honour among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous."
— Hebrews 13:4
"The husband should fulfil his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband... Do not deprive each other except by mutual consent and for a time."
— 1 Corinthians 7:3-5

The Bible is consistent: sexual intimacy within marriage is honoured, even celebrated. The marital relationship is presented as having mutual obligations — both partners owe each other. This is remarkably egalitarian for ancient texts.

On Love and Relationships — 1 Corinthians 13

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails."
— 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

This is considered the most complete definition of love in any text in human history. It describes not a feeling — but a practice, a commitment, a daily choice. Notice: "keeps no record of wrongs." This is the biblical vision of forgiveness in relationships.

On Marriage — Ephesians 5

"Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her... In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies."
— Ephesians 5:25, 28

The standard for a Christian husband: sacrifice, service, protection. Love like Christ loved — completely, sacrificially, unconditionally. This is not a small standard. It is the highest possible standard.

Forgiveness — A Core Christian Teaching

"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
— 1 John 1:9
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."
— John 3:16

Christianity places forgiveness at the absolute centre of its theology. No sin is beyond God's forgiveness for the sincere believer. This is parallel to Islam's teaching on tawbah — both traditions teach a God of unlimited mercy for those who genuinely return to Him.

Common ground between Islam and Christianity: Both traditions command: worship God alone, honour parents, prohibit murder and theft, prohibit sexual immorality outside proper relationship, command love of neighbour, and promise unlimited divine forgiveness to the sincere repentant. The overlap is profound. The God of mercy is recognised in both traditions.
