Islamic framework first: The guidance in this page is intended for adults within their halal relationships — married couples, or those preparing for nikah. Sexual health knowledge protects families and reduces harm. Islam encourages knowledge ('ilm) in all domains.
The Foundation: Consent
All sexual activity must be fully, freely, and enthusiastically consented to by both parties. This is not just a modern concept — Islamic fiqh (jurisprudence) has strong positions on a wife's right to consent. Both the Quran and hadith emphasise that intimacy should be approached with care, tenderness, and mutual consideration.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Let none of you fall upon his wife like an animal falls upon an animal. Let there be between you a messenger." When asked what the messenger was, he said: "Kisses and words." — This hadith, recorded by Al-Daylami, explicitly endorses foreplay and emotional preparation before physical intimacy.
Physical Protection
- Condoms — only method protecting against both pregnancy AND STIs. 98% effective when used correctly. Available at all major pharmacies.
- Contraception — multiple options (pill, IUD, implant, injection). Married couples have many choices. Consult a doctor for what works best for you.
- Regular STI testing — recommended annually for sexually active people. Most STIs are treatable if caught early.
- Vaccination — HPV vaccine prevents multiple strains of HPV (which can cause cervical cancer).
Emotional Safety
- You have the right to say no — at any stage, for any reason
- Pressure or coercion is never acceptable — in or outside of marriage
- Post-intimacy emotional care matters — both parties deserve to feel respected
What Islam Says About Intimate Relations
- Intimacy within marriage is an act of worship — the Prophet ﷺ said there is a reward even in this
- Mutual pleasure is explicitly mentioned in hadith — the husband should not neglect his wife's fulfilment
- Various intimate acts are permissible between spouses except those specifically prohibited
- Anal intercourse is explicitly prohibited in hadith
- Intimacy during menstruation is prohibited; all other times are permissible
For Christian readers: Sexual intimacy within marriage is celebrated in the Bible. Song of Solomon is an entire book devoted to marital love and physical intimacy. 1 Corinthians 7 is explicit that spouses should not withhold from each other. Safe, loving, consensual marital intimacy is honoured in Christianity.
