Overview of Contraception Methods
1. Condoms (Barrier Method)
Only method that protects against both pregnancy AND STIs. Available without prescription. Both male and female condoms exist. Give YOU control.
2. Oral Contraceptive Pills (The Pill)
Daily hormone pills. 98% effective with perfect use. Available at pharmacies across Pakistan. Common brands: Microgynon, Lo-Femenal, Diane-35. Must be taken at the same time daily.
3. Emergency Contraception (Morning-After Pill)
Can be taken up to 72 hours after unprotected sex. More effective the sooner you take it. Available at pharmacies as "Postinor-2" or "i-Pill." Does NOT cause abortion — prevents implantation.
4. IUD (Intrauterine Device)
Small T-shaped device inserted by a doctor. Copper IUDs are hormone-free and work for up to 10 years. Hormonal IUDs work for 3-5 years. Over 99% effective. Reversible.
5. Implant (Nexplanon)
Small rod inserted under skin of upper arm by a doctor. Works for 3 years. Over 99% effective. Reversible.
6. Injection (Depo-Provera)
Hormonal injection given every 3 months by a healthcare provider. 99% effective with correct use.
7. Natural Methods (Less Reliable)
Fertility awareness, calendar method, withdrawal. These have much higher failure rates (up to 25%) and offer NO protection against STIs. Not recommended as primary contraception.
