Pakistani Wedding Stages
Rishta / Proposal
Families meet. The formal request is made. Preliminary agreement is reached.
Mangni / Engagement
Rings exchanged. Families formally commit. Can be small gathering or large event.
Mehndi
Night before nikah. Henna applied to bride. Music, dance, celebration. Women-focused event.
Baraat
Groom's procession to the bride's home. The main wedding day event in many Pakistani traditions.
Nikah
The Islamic marriage contract. Legal and spiritual. The most important ceremony.
Rukhsati
The bride's departure from her parents' home. Often the most emotional moment of a Pakistani wedding.
Valima
Reception hosted by groom's family. Sunnah. Celebrates the marriage with extended community.
Nikah — The Ceremony That Matters Most
The nikah can be simple or elaborate. What matters: consent of both parties, mahr agreed and stated, two witnesses, a registered Nikah Nama. Everything else is culture — beautiful, but optional.
Documents You'll Need
- Both parties' CNICs
- Divorce certificate / death certificate if previously married or widowed
- Nikah Registrar (Qazi) — found through your local mosque or Union Council
- Register at Union Council within 30 days for legal certificate
Budget Reality
Pakistani weddings can cost anywhere from Rs 50,000 (simple nikah ceremony) to Rs 5 crore+. The most important thing that day is not the decoration — it is the consent, the joy, and the commitment. Begin your marriage without debt if at all possible.
